The "R" Family Vacation 2009

The “R’s” went on a much needed family vacation. Dad completed his first year in his new position at work and with all the hours and stresses that the new job brings he was in need of a nice, quiet, family vacation. So we packed the kids up and headed to Navarre, FL. My cousin and her husband have a lovely home on the water that we were able to use for a glorious 8 day retreat. It was extremely quiet and peaceful. Waking up to the salty air and the waves just a short distance down the the pier.

Ethan wasted no time diving into the water. He did this day one, but never returned back…LOL. Guess all that seaweed turned him off, much like his Mother 🙂

Ashton couldn’t have had a better time if he planned it himself. Sure, it didn’t have Mickey, but it did have FISH! Who would have thought I’d birth a son that had a passion for fish. Surely, I didn’t. In fact, it never even crossed my mind. Not even once. But that is just what he is, a little fisherman. And honestly, I’m excited to bring him more places for him to be able to explore his new found love. No, you won’t catch me baiting his line or better yet getting the fish off the line, but you can find me nearby doing what this Mom does best, catching the rays! Thanks to Uncle Bill who also came up for a few days and spent literally, 8 hours on the pier with Ashton and Daddy on Friday afternoon doing nothing but catching fish after fish. I’m not sure who enjoyed it the most, they all did, but I’ll give the award to Ashton. Because all of us adults were just tickled over the joys a 3yo can have by catching fish.

Fishing wasn’t the only thing we did while in Navarre. We also were able to see many beautiful beaches that Mommy used to go to while in college (University of West Florida). We started with Pensacola Beach to have dinner at Flounder’s with Aunt Bunny and Uncle Bill. Although, I wasn’t able to remember much about the town, one thing is for sure, I loved the atmosphere at this place and so did my family. They had a playarea for the kids and a a volleyball court in the sand. The boys had a blast. Ashton played with other kids and Ethan made his rounds to all the tables to say hi and show everyone just how cute this 15mth old boy is.

Before Uncle Bill left we had to get at least ONE funny photo 🙂

Next came Saturday. We had to part ways with Aunt Bunny and Uncle Bill. We really wished they could stay longer, but we also had to get ready for our next visitor. Ms. Julianne. Mommy’s college roommate. I hadn’t seen her since 2003, just a month before Dad popped the BIG QUESTION. It was so nice to show off our little family and just catch up on old times. I think she was scared at how much I remembered. LOL. We even stopped by the condo she owned that I lived at with her. Her parents now own it and wow, has it ever changed. Still lovely, that is for sure. We also hit McGuire’s for dinner. No, we didn’t get to hear any of the awesome Irish tunes we all know and love, but we did have a nice dinner with an old friend.

Sunday morning Ms. Julianne headed home, back to AL. This is when the real family time stepped into place. We hung out on the pier for a bit while Ashton worked up the courage to go down the slide and into the sea, as he liked to call it. He must have done this 100x or better. He just loved it. And the water was only about 3ft deep so he was able to walk back to the ladder and climb out. Perfect for a 3yo.

Ashton has a new found love for the fast food place, Taco Bell. He had never been, and honestly, I have no idea how he could read the sign. But for a good month he had been asking me to take him to Taco Bell. So Sunday night Daddy found a Taco Bell and a park on the water so we picked up our food and had dinner at the park. After a yummy dinner (according to Ashton) we played for a bit and then headed out to Navarre Beach. Mom and Dad decided that Juana’s would be the place to go and have a drink. Ethan played in the sand and Ashton with his clothes on and all, went straight into the water and swam for a good while before we had to leave. It looked like it was going to storm, but not this trip, we didn’t have one drop of rain.

Ethan’s drunkin’ tracks at Juana’s 🙂

Most of the day Monday the boys would fish and Ashton would go down the slide. It was a rather relaxing day. Then for dinner we decided to try out a little hole in the wall Mexican place, El Patron, yumo is all I can say. They had the BEST margarita’s and banana daiquiris. Oh and their salsa, oh the salsa…to die for 🙂 I had veggie fajitas and loved every moment of them. The boys shared tacos and a ham sandwich. Daddy just had chips.

Tuesday we decided that besides going to the gym, we were staying home, all day. Yes, we went to the YMCA everyday we were in Navarre. The boys adapted well to their new surroundings and it gave us parents a little time to work off some of the extra calories we had been indulging in. So we did more of the same, hung out at the beach in the backyard, went down the slide, and did lots of fishing.

The last full day we had in Navarre was Wednesday. I’m not sure was more upset to leave, Ashton or Daddy. Dad made sure to get everything in that he wanted to do with the boys. From fishing in the morning and night, flying Ashton’s kite that Santa brought him, and going to the Shark Museum across the street. It was a lovely day and it ended with us heading back to Pensacola for dinner at Carrabba’s only after stopping at Walmart to buy Ashton his very own fishing pole! I’m telling you, I have a fisherman on board 🙂 He picked it out, Lightening McQueen, from the Cars movie. Sure he didn’t catch any fish yet, but he did have a few on the hook but they jumped off as he was reeling them in. Too bad dude, maybe next time. Oh, and let’s not forget that Ashton named ALL the fish they caught, from Fasty, to Swimmy, to Slowy….this kid has quite the imagination.

Thursday morning we had to wake the boys up. They wanted to stay in the Navarre beds all day. Ashton woke up and cried. He said, “I don’t want to leave Dee Dee’s house!” Ethan looked at me like I was nuts, packing up his bags. I think we have ourselves a couple little beach bums. Can’t imagine where they got that trait from??? Hehehe!!!

So at 6:30am central time, the “R’s” packed it up and headed him. We hope to return to Navarre as early as this fall or winter. We loved it that much. It was just what the doctor ordered for all of us. We should be back at home around 2pm Eastern Time, we are excited to see Kilo. I’m sure he missed all of Ethan’s treats thrown to him on the floor 🙂
Enjoy the photos and we hope you all have a GREAT family vacation as well.

These were all taken right outside the back door of my cousins house. When they call it Paradise, they really know what they are talking about!
Daddy took this picture to say, “Mark my words Tara, I will buy you this house one day!” If you see the flags behing me, those are the flags to a Par 3 golf course. There was also a full tennis courts, a Mother-in-Law suite, and another separate building, maybe for the friends who outstayed their welcome in the house? LOL

Goodnight Navarre, you will be missed!

Looks like a great trip! How fun! And Tara you look GREAT!! So tan and fit 🙂 So proud of you for hitting the YMCA everyday! Way to go. I didn't know you went to UWF. I went and looked there for my undergrad in Marine Biology, but went to Eckerd College instead. It's beautiful up there!
